Filmed in the Chapel John Dowland’s melancholy masterpiece in a new recording infused by both passion and scholarly research. The seven Lachrimae Pavan of 1604 are widely held to mark not only the high point of Dowland’s work but the entire genre of viol consort music. Dowland takes a lamenting pavan that he had written some years earlier and develops its theme into a cycle which takes the listener through Lachrimae pavans The seven pavans are variations on a theme, the " Lachrimæ pavan", which Dowland had already made well known as a lute solo and a song. (That pavan was reworked into the song " Flow my tears " in Dowland's Second Book of Songs (1600) [3] and begins with a "falling tear" motif of four notes.) Dowland’s Lachrimae (1604) is perhaps the greatest but most enigmatic publication of instrumental music from before the eighteenth century.
